Shelter for Runaway Teens Opens

Rising Ground, one of New York's fastest-growing human services organizations has opened a new residence in the South Bronx for homeless and runaway teenage girls. The round-the-clock residential program can accommodate up to 20 youth, and uses a holistic approach to promote their empowerment and independence, as they support each other in a group setting. Rising Ground social workers and case planners help the girls find employment and internships, enroll in school, and teach them life skills, such as money management and organization.

Tamia, 18, has been through six or seven shelters in New York City. She loves her new home and its new atmosphere. “It doesn’t feel like a shelter,” she says. “You feel the love when you walk through the door.”
